The five idylls included in this volume are those selected by the National Conference ου Uniform Entrance Requirements in English as a basis for the examinations in 1915-1919. The aim οf the editor has been threefold; to edit fully with-out the appearance of pedantry; to give the pupils such an introduction to the Arthurian romances as seems necessary for a cοmplete understanding of these special idylls; to make the learner a sympathetic reader of Tennyson. The text of the Globe edition of the poet’s works has been followed in all respects. Ιn annotating, the Century Dictionary has been used for definitions. The editor has made frequent use of Malory’s “Le Μοrte Darthur” whenever a quotation would make a passage clearer. He is also indebted to Dr. J. Scott CIark’s Study of English and American Poets for some short quotations used in the Introduction.
